Cultural Awareness opens doors to better language understanding and mutual solidarity.
Blazer High School-Ashland, KY
Contextual Understanding: Language is deeply embedded in culture. Understanding the cultural context in which a language is spoken helps learners comprehend idioms, expressions, humor, and other nuances that are often lost in translation.
Communication Skills: Effective communication goes beyond vocabulary and grammar. It involves understanding social norms, body language, gestures, and etiquette. Learning about culture helps learners navigate conversations more appropriately and respectfully.
Cultural Sensitivity: Exposure to cultural practices, beliefs, and values fosters empathy and tolerance. It helps learners become more open-minded and appreciative of diversity, reducing cultural stereotypes and biases.
Real-Life Application: Cultural knowledge prepares learners for real-life interactions in the target language. It enhances their ability to engage in meaningful conversations, participate in social events, and understand media and literature from the culture.
Motivation and Engagement: Learning about a culture can make language learning more interesting and motivating. It provides a broader perspective and context that can make the language more relevant and exciting to learners.
Historical and Social Insight: Understanding the history, traditions, and social issues of a culture enriches the learning experience. It allows learners to appreciate the evolution of the language and its role in society.
The online and onsite sessions in Smrtz T&T´s program provides students an opportunity to interact in all three modes of communication—interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational. The three modes of communication describe how learners use and interact with language in real-world contexts. Below, we present a brief overview of these modes and the types of activities in our curriculum that effectively engage them.
The Common Core strands of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening are captured in the standards for learning languages’ goal area of Communication, by emphasizing the purpose behind the communication in all three modes: Interpretive, Interpersonal and Presentational.
The content of the program is organized according to the national standards, blending the two focus goal areas of Communication and Cultures into one standard. The remaining goals of Connections, Comparisons, and Communities are embedded within Communication and Cultures to ensure all language learners expectations at any level of school, college-, career and world- ready.

The Spanish Course
The Spanish Program at SmrtzT&T offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the target language, literature, and hispanic culture in a set of language-learning modules. The program offers a series of core school, college and career professional development sessions in Spanish from Novice Low to Advanced High, Superior or even Distinguished Level courses via online and onsite teaching and tutoring sessions.
A learner-centered approach provides opportunities for students to practice critical and creative thinking, problem solving, and decision making. This involves recall, application, analysis, synthesis, prediction and evaluation; all of which contribute to the development and enhancement of conceptual understandings. A learner-centered approach also encourages students to demonstrate ownership of their ideas and to reflect on and monitor their thinking as they make decisions and take action when speaking a world language different from their own.
The three modes of communication—Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational—defined in the World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, are foundational to the Spanish Language and Culture course. This course provides students with opportunities to demonstrate their proficiency in each of the three modes in the Intermediate to Advanced range, as described in the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners.

My Teaching Philosophy
By Mauricio Martínez Martínez
Teaching is an incredibly fulfilling experience that brings immense rewards. In my view, each classroom should adopt a learner-centered approach, fostering opportunities for students to engage in critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making. This encompasses various cognitive processes such as recall, application, analysis, synthesis, prediction, and evaluation, all of which contribute to the development and deepening of conceptual understanding.
Having accumulated 35 years of teaching experience in multicultural, multiethnic, and multilingual classrooms, I firmly believe in empowering learners to take ownership of their ideas and to reflect upon and monitor their thinking as they navigate a world language different from their own.
My teaching philosophy aligns with the Common Core strands of Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening, encapsulated in the standards for learning languages' goal area of Communication. It emphasizes the purpose behind communication in all three modes: Interpretive, Interpersonal, and Presentational.
"I teach because I want every child to know they are valued, loved, and supported daily. I want my students to learn that school can be a fun place with love and endless opportunities."
I strongly believe that language is a social construct, and collaborative learning strategies can enhance communication and language proficiency in our students. Through collaborative learning, individuals not only take responsibility for their own learning and success but also contribute to the learning and success of their peers. Each participant assumes roles, utilizes resources, and organizes their learning in a manner that best suits them. Collaborative learning promotes a sense of responsibility, deepens understanding of the subject matter, and fosters mutual respect among students.
"Learning another language means opening your mind, opening your heart, and making your world a bigger, better place. It brings people together and connects the world."
In conclusion, my teaching experience is anchored in four pillars: Planning, Classroom Management, Environment, and Professionalism. I plan my lessons based on my students' needs and expectations. I maintain effective classroom management through control, monitoring, and proximity. I cultivate an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity within each class, accommodating multiple and diverse student groups.
Lastly, I value professionalism as a means of self-reflection and personal and professional growth. There is always room for improvement. Teaching is a joyful endeavor, and I am deeply passionate about empowering individuals to become fluent in Spanish or English within a matter of months, rather than years. Teaching flows through my veins.
Presentational Writing:
La Postal, Los Plegables y El Infograma Cultural
I came home from a mile-long list of thoughts and ideas, but one stood out among all the rest: How do we transform presentational writing into a meaningful process for students at all levels? It was worthwhile, however. If anything, it was comforting to be in a room of people who agree that presentational writing is one of the most difficult skills to address in a purposeful way. Well, this is how. Students write a postcard and develop a cultural infogram.
Foldables, Flipcharts and Manipulatives
Foldables (also known as manipulatives) are 3D graphic organisers that engage students in visual and kinaesthetic learning. Students fold, cut, write, draw and manipulate information while collecting, recording, evaluating and communicating data. They provide the opportunity for students to show their understanding and mastery of content.
How Flipcharts are aligned with Semiotics
Semiotics, also called semiology, the study of signs and sign-using behaviour. It was defined by one of its founders, the Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure, as the study of “the life of signs within society.”
Peirce’s seminal work in the field was anchored in pragmatism and logic. He defined a sign as “something which stands to somebody for something,” and one of his major contributions to semiotics was the categorization of signs into three main types: (1) an icon, which resembles its referent (such as a road sign for falling rocks); (2) an index, which is associated with its referent (as smoke is a sign of fire); and (3) a symbol, which is related to its referent only by convention (as with words or traffic signals). Peirce also demonstrated that a sign can never have a definite meaning, for the meaning must be continuously qualified. (Taken from https://www.britannica.com/science/semiotics)
Presentational Speaking: OPA: Oral Proficiency Assessment
¿Qué hiciste en tus pasadas vacaciones?
Presentational Speaking
Speakers at the Intermediate level such as Reagan Hayes and Sarah Hicks are distinguished primarily by their ability to create with the language when talking about familiar topics related to their daily life. They are able to recombine learned material in order to express personal meaning. Intermediate-level speakers can ask simple questions and can handle a straightforward survival situation. They produce sentence-level language, ranging from discrete sentences to strings of sentences, typically in present and past time. Without a doubt they were understood by me as an examiner and interlocutor who is accustomed to dealing with non-native learners of the target language.
Sarah and Reagan talk about their last vacations. It is evident their mastery of the past tense use and knowledge of the conjugation of the verbs.

Collaborative Learning: Language as a Social Construct
At Blazer High School, the World Language Department firmly believes that language is a social construct and collaborative learning strategies may enhance better communication and language proficiency on our students. In collaborative learning, individual participants must also take responsibility for their team learning and succeeding, but their roles, resources, and organisation is left up to them.
CL Improves cooperation: When given a specific goal, learners are more likely to engage in thoughtful discussion with each other.
Collaborative Learning enhances responsibility. Improves both their understanding of the subject and their esteem for each other.

International teachers meet students´needs and expectations.
Many of the American-sponsored schools overseas contract with private organizations in the United States to assist in the professional staff recruitment process. The schools frequently send representatives to stateside teacher “recruiting fairs” to locate qualified staff for anticipated vacancies. SMrtz program provided support and training to those newcomers to the USA Educational System.
