"Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality." - Warren Bennis

Good evening to all our panelists and keynote speakers. I want to express my anticipation and excitement for tonight's leadership team meeting at ACTC. As a passionate advocate for leadership development and fostering a culture of excellence, I believe this gathering provides us with a valuable opportunity to collaborate, share insights, and collectively propel our institution to new heights.

Having been actively involved in various leadership roles at ACTC, including my engagement with the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, sponsorship of the Hispanic Honor Society, and leadership positions in both the World Language and Technology departments at Blazer High School, I am deeply committed to enhancing our school and college leadership capabilities.

I am eager to contribute to the conversation and exchange ideas on how we can further empower our students, inspire our faculty, and cultivate an environment that nurtures innovation and personal growth. Additionally, I look forward to discussing ways in which we can effectively support our teachers, leverage technology to enhance learning experiences, and promote inclusivity and cultural understanding throughout the campus.

I am confident that tonight's meeting will serve as a catalyst for positive change and advancement within our leadership team. Together, I believe we can shape a bright future for ACTC, solidifying its reputation as a beacon of educational excellence.

Thank you for your leadership and for providing us with this invaluable platform to collaborate and contribute. I eagerly await tonight's discussion and the opportunity to work alongside you and the rest of the team to further elevate ACTC's leadership initiatives.

Having said that, I would like to talk about "A Leader in Me" is a school-wide process developed by Franklin Covey, based on Stephen Covey's book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People." It is an educational program designed to empower students with leadership and life skills, fostering their personal and academic growth.

The "Leader in Me" approach aims to create a culture of leadership within a school environment, where students are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, set goals, and develop essential skills to succeed in life. The program emphasizes the integration of leadership principles and habits into the school curriculum, fostering a holistic approach to education.

The core of "A Leader in Me" is the teaching of the seven habits, which are:

Through the implementation of these habits, students develop critical skills such as leadership, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and teamwork. The program also encourages students to take on leadership roles within the school, fostering a sense of responsibility and engagement.

"A Leader in Me" has been implemented in numerous academic, sports, artistic and cultural activities at ACTC and Blazer High School, with positive outcomes reported in terms of student achievement, behavior, and overall school and college culture. It provides a framework for fostering leadership skills in students and creating a supportive and empowering learning environment.

What is it to be a leader:

A leader is an individual who possesses the ability to guide, inspire, and influence others towards a common goal or vision. Leadership is not restricted to a specific role or position, as leaders can be found in various settings such as business, politics, community organizations, sports teams, and even within families.

Leadership involves a combination of qualities, skills, and behaviors that enable individuals to effectively lead others. Some key characteristics of a leader include:

It's important to note that leadership is not limited to a single style or approach. Different leaders may exhibit various leadership styles, such as autocratic, democratic, transformational, or servant leadership, depending on the situation and the needs of their followers.

Ultimately, a leader's primary focus is on guiding and empowering others, fostering growth, and achieving shared goals through their influence and example.

Teachers are Leaders and leaders pave the way to success

Now let me take you to the ground and talk to you about how I have embodied such a role.  As a leader in the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at ACTC, my role has been to spearhead and organize various activities and events that celebrate and promote Hispanic Culture and Heritage in our School, College and Community. I collaborate with students, faculty, and the community to create a vibrant, colorful, savory and inclusive atmosphere during this special month under the leadership and supervision of Mr. Harrison.  I ensure that the celebration incorporates educational workshops, cultural performances, art exhibitions, and engaging presentations that highlight the contributions and diversity of the Hispanic community.

In addition to my involvement in the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, I also serve as a sponsor of the Hispanic Honor Society at Blazer High School. In this role, I mentor and guide a group of exceptional students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to promoting Hispanic culture and community service. I organize meetings, facilitate discussions, and encourage the society members to develop initiatives that foster cultural understanding and appreciation within the school and beyond.

As a class teacher with approximately 30 students in my classroom, my role is to provide a supportive and engaging learning environment. I design and implement lesson plans that cater to the diverse needs of my students, encouraging their academic growth and personal development. I foster a positive classroom culture that promotes collaboration, critical thinking, communication and a love for learning. I also act as a mentor and advisor to my students, offering guidance and support in their academic and personal endeavors.

As a leader of the World Language Department at Blazer High School, my primary responsibility is to inspire and motivate other language teachers. I collaborate with them to identify innovative teaching approaches and develop effective strategies for language instruction. I encourage professional development and provide resources that enhance their teaching skills. By fostering a collaborative and supportive environment, I empower my fellow teachers to make impactful changes in the teaching of foreign languages, ultimately benefiting the students' language acquisition and cultural understanding.

In my role as part of the Technology Department at Blazer High School, I have taken a proactive approach to adapt and innovate during the COVID-19 pandemic. I developed a new pathway to learning program that leverages technology to facilitate remote and hybrid learning. I collaborate with teachers, students, and parents to ensure a seamless integration of technology in the educational process. I provide training and support to educators, helping them leverage digital tools and platforms effectively. By embracing technology, we have successfully navigated the challenges posed by the pandemic and provided students with quality education.

Furthermore, as the leader of the International Teachers Program in South Carolina, my role was to facilitate cultural exchange and professional development opportunities for international teachers. I collaborated with educational institutions and organizations to establish partnerships and programs that enable teachers from diverse backgrounds to share their expertise and experiences. I coordinated orientations, workshops, and networking events that promote cross-cultural understanding and enhance the professional growth of international teachers.

In summary, across these various leadership roles, I take on responsibilities such as organizing and promoting cultural celebrations, mentoring students, designing and implementing effective teaching strategies, fostering collaboration among teachers, integrating technology in education, and facilitating cultural exchange and professional development opportunities. Through these roles, I strive to make a positive impact on students, educators, and the broader community, promoting inclusivity, academic excellence, and cultural understanding.
